Things to do in Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City is a vibrant and exciting place with endless things to see and do. Went to Mexico City during a 3 day weekend, was not sure what to expect, looking at the historic architecture from my Airport Cab ride to the hotel, was amazed, the city is beautiful. Overall had a Great time and loved it, walking the streets, listing to Street Band, eating street food, Visiting cultural center, and a chance to see the Pyramids at Teotihuacan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sure was glad to have made this trip.

Airport: Immigration and customs was quick and easy, and I was on my way out in 5 minutes, what a difference between Mexico immigration at Cancun during my earlier trip.

There are prepaid Taxi booths by Airport Gate 10, I took a taxi and the cost was less then 10 US$.

Traffic: Traffic in Mexico City can be a challenge, so a rental car would be out of the question if you used to driving in the USA.

Hotel: I stayed near the Historic Center, 2 blocks from Zocalo, the Main Square in Mexico city and walking distance to many attractions the City has to offer. Check discount hotel prices at booking.com

Safety: I felt very Safe in Mexico City, I took Cabs in the middle of the night and did not have any issues. Take precautions: Like any big city, be aware of your surroundings and take precautions against petty theft.

Tips: Learn some basic Spanish: Even a few phrases will go a long way in helping you get around and interact with locals.
Use public transportation: The metro system is affordable and efficient.
Be prepared for crowds: Mexico City is a bustling metropolis.

Above, Picture of Zocalo (main square) with the largest Cathedral in the Americas, the Cathedral is beautiful inside. Stroll Through the Historic Center:  Visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Palacio Nacional to see murals by Diego Rivera.

Mexico City has fantastic art museums, Below - Palace of Fine Arts, cultural center in Mexico City.

Street Performance:

Street Food: The food scene in Mexico City is incredible. Sample street tacos, indulge in a multi-course gourmet meal, or explore the bustling markets for delicious snacks. Since my travels to Peru and Nicaragua and having tried the delicious street food there, in Mexico city I mostly ate Street Food, and I loved it.

Pyramids at Teotihuacan

Explore the Ancient Ruins of Teotihuacan, The Pyramids are an hour outside the City, I took a bus from Terminal Central del Norte, the return ticket was about $5 US. These awe-inspiring pyramids are a must-see.

Pyramid of the Sun, Climb to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun for incredible views, The pyramids are aligned to reflect the alignment of the three stars of Orion's Belt.

A walk along the Street, looking at the colorful Shops. I was there in September close to the Mexican independence day, you'll see streets shops selling Flags and other Mexico Gifts, thousands of people gather at Zocalo for the celebrations.

On a Sunday evening one can see several Street Bands, and they are actually very good.

Public display of affection is seen more often in Mexico city than in the USA

  1. Wow, only $5, that’s what I call cheap traveling #studentbudget I have a lot of cities I want to visit next but on my budget it will take me forever. The Pyramid of the sun is a very impressive structure; the view from the top must be amazing! Mexico is a gorgeous country but the latest issues and their crime rate forces me to avoid Mexico City for a while. My mom would go berserk is she found out I was planning to go there; she already disapproves with all my traveling, she doesn’t like me boarding so many planes.

  2. Hi there, good to read about your experience in Mexico City. I visited as well for a weekend. I was able to visit Teotihuacan too. Although I didn't climb all the way to the top of the pyramid, I still enjoyed the views. It was a gorgeous day too! I bought a hat as a souvenir which I still have so it definitely reminds me of that trip when I see it.
